WEEE!!!! Life in Amman rules.

You can’t date here. The concept of a boyfriend or girlfriend doesn’t exist–you’re either single, engaged or married. Sex out of wedlock is unheard of. God forbid it is heard of–if you’re a woman and you have sex with a man who is not your husband, you will be killed, no ifs, ands or buts (the guy has a better chance of surviving).

And don’t even get me started on homosexuality–it’s also a crime punishable by death. But people do it anyway, if the “gay night” theme at the shi-sha (hookah) bar we attended last night is any indication. I’m going to look into gay culture more for my first story for Carlene’s class.

If you kill someone, you will be killed. If you steal something, they’ll cut off your hand. There are plenty of sane, educated people in this country who see these as reasonable punishments. Our guide is one of them. He’s not crazy. That’s just the way it is.

I sound like I’m complaining or scared. I’m not. There are rules, yes, but this is the culture, a culture I am a part of for the next month. So I better learn to respect it.

Plus, it’s been really fun so far. The food is great, the people are nice, the city is an absolute dream. I’ve even taken some a break from running up steps of giant ampitheaters to learn a little bit of Arabic here and there. “Salam” is “hello” (this one is easy–all it is is “salami” without the “i”). “Shakran” is “thank you” which is good to know, though I still feel pretty funny saying it. “Luh-shakran” is “no thank you.” Okay so I know three words. I’m working on it.

Me in the ampitheater. Thanks for taking this Jess.

Here’s a picture of what we eat most meals:

Always hummus, taboule, veggies and pita, sometimes meat as well.

One more hour until dinner. Can’t wait to feast on all this deliciousness!!! Gah.

Song of the day. Pretty generic, but appropriate.
